The annual Manning Review and Forecast was published last week by Drewry, based on data from 3,000 vessels employing 40,000 seafarers.
The report highlights some major concerns. It estimates the global shortage of officers today at 8.5%, increasing to 10% by 2030 due to fleet growth, earlier retirement, longer leave periods and low intake of young talent at maritime training institutions.
All vessel areas will face a shortage and the 10% mentioned represents a shortfall in the number of heads, excluding the shortage of officers with the competencies that owners need to operate their vessels in a manner that fulfils their business plans.
To cope with these challenges, it is more important than ever for shipping companies to have a proper long-term strategy for retaining, managing fluctuations (the fact that crews will leave) and the ability to attract and recruit new talent.
Danica is more than just a crew service provider and crew manager. We partner with our clients to solve not only their immediate crewing needs but also develop together and support medium and long-term strategies – building crew pools for tomorrow through training, digitalisation, local presentation, diversification of recruitment through our international network of offices and branding in the crew employment market of the shipping companies we work for.
