At Danica, we review more than 1,000 applications and CVs from seafarers every month.
As part of our strict screening processes, we are disappointed to report an increase in CVs submitted with false information – such as sea service at higher ranks or on vessel types where the officer has never worked.
We believe the shortage of crew has increased this trend and officers are tempted to stretch the truth to achieve a role at a higher rank or on a vessel type where the salary is higher, and where the chances of being accepted is higher – going on the logic there is less competition at higher levels.
Inexperienced officers taking on roles at a higher level with a lack the experience for the role is a massive danger to the safe operation of a vessel.
With this increase in exaggerated CVs, stringent screening has become even more important.
At Danica we carefully check the background of each new applicant. We do this by taking references, contacting senior officers on the vessels where the seafarer claims to have been onboard and checking that stamps in passports correlate with joining and disembarking ports.
In addition, we use tests and interviews to verify the seafarer’s competencies and qualifications.
