Ten cadets from Bandari Maritime Academy (BMA) begin their sea-time training for the first time through a new partnership with Danica Crewing. The programme provides two six-month onboard placements, opening critical pathways to officer certification and careers in global shipping.
The initiative strengthens Danica’s talent pipeline in East Africa, supporting Kenya’s growing maritime sector and addressing the global shortage of qualified officers. Kenyan cadets bring strong technical training, near-native English proficiency, and internationally compliant education standards, making them well suited for the global fleet.
All the cadets have, of course, passed Danica’s strict screening and all passed with very high results.
Danica CEO, Henrik Jensen, has just returned from a visit to the Bandari Maritime Academy to flag off the cadet partnership: “I was very impressed by the motivation, knowledge and attitude of the cadets. When I asked them why they want to go to sea they all answered “I want to be a captain (or chief engineer)”. We are looking forward to having these cadets onboard, support them and see their career and development progressing”
With visa-free travel to many countries, strong connectivity to major airport hubs, and no local taxes or social contributions required for employers, Kenyan seafarers are also operationally efficient for global shipping companies.
By securing sea-time opportunities, the partnership removes a key barrier to certification for BMA students and invests in the long-term development of future officers, captains, and chief engineers.
