Kenyan Cadet programme update

In cooperation with our German client, OKEE Ship Management, Danica Maritime continues the deployment of Kenyan cadets, which began in January.

All cadets are carefully selected and have completed their studies at Bandari Maritime Academy in Mombasa. The academy forms part of Blue Kenya, an EU-supported project aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure, including maritime education.

Kenya is an attractive future source of maritime talent. The country has a large young population, and seafaring offers both job security and strong earning potential compared to local standards.

Kenyan students also benefit from a solid educational foundation. The school system remains closely aligned with the British model, and English is widely spoken, giving cadets strong basic competencies on which to build their maritime training.

Initial feedback from vessels has been positive. Kenyan cadets have adapted well onboard and have integrated smoothly into mixed crews including seafarers from Eastern Europe, the Philippines, and India. Interestingly, a significant share of maritime students in Kenya are women, and this is naturally reflected in Danica’s cadet pool. We look forward to continuing to support these cadets in their development and, in time, welcoming them onboard as officers.

Our Kenyan cadet programme is another example of our forward-looking approach to securing the next generation of officers and helping clients reduce future crew supply risk.
