On 25 June, the maritime industry marks the Day of the Seafarer, an important opportunity to recognise the people whose skills, commitment and resilience keep global trade moving.
For Danica Crewing Specialists, the day is also a reminder that supporting seafarers must go beyond words of appreciation. It requires continued focus on safety, wellbeing and fair treatment across the industry.
Many of the policies, conventions and regulations needed to protect seafarers are already in place. The challenge is not necessarily a lack of rules, but the need for more consistent enforcement.
The single biggest improvement for seafarers’ wellbeing and safety would be ensuring that existing regulations are properly implemented, monitored and upheld, as the industry already has a comprehensive regulatory framework in place and would benefit most from a stronger commitment to consistently applying the standards that have been agreed.
Recent years have also highlighted the vulnerability of seafarers during geopolitical crises. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the conflict in the Red Sea and wider Middle East, seafarers have too often found themselves caught up in situations beyond their control.
Shipowners, flag states, international bodies and governments cannot prevent global conflicts from happening, but they do have a responsibility to do everything possible to protect seafarers when risks arise.
The stronger and more coordinated response seen from industry organisations, governments and the IMO in recent crises is encouraging. This united approach must continue, ensuring that seafarers’ safety is prioritised and that those serving at sea receive the protection and support they deserve.
On Day of the Seafarer, Danica Crewing Specialists joins the industry in thanking seafarers for their essential work and reaffirming the need to create a safer, fairer and more sustainable working environment for them worldwide.
